Avery Rowland
Welcome to my fundraising page! I’m taking on the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon with Fred’s Team, the official running program of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). My goal is to raise as much as I can to support groundbreaking cancer research at MSK, and your donation will give me a boost as I train for my race.
Why I am running with Fred’s Team is deeply personal and rooted in my family’s experience with cancer, resilience, and everything it has taught me about strength.
My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer that had metastasized to his liver in the fall of my freshman year of college. Just a few months later, COVID began, and my brother and I were sent home from school. With my mom working as an essential worker, we became his daily support system at home during a time that already felt frightening and uncertain. He was given less than a 10% chance of survival, and for a long time we lived with that reality while taking it day by day.
He went through many rounds of chemotherapy and multiple surgeries, and received treatment in Norwalk, CT through an MSK partnership. Because of the extraordinary care of his doctors, nurses, support staff, and medical team, and because of my dad’s own strength and determination, he defied every expectation. His resilience carried him through some of the hardest moments of his life, and he never stopped fighting. Today, he has had clean scans for the past five years. There are no words for what it means to still have him here with us. I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude knowing how fortunate we are, and how many families do not get this outcome.
At the same time, cancer has also taken people I love. My grandfather and my aunt both lost their lives to the disease. Their absence is something I carry with me, and it is a constant reminder of how much more work still needs to be done.
I am running with Fred’s Team is because I want to turn everything my family has lived through into action. I knew that if I ever ran a marathon, I wanted it to be in honor of my aunt and grandpa and to celebrate my dad. Before he got cancer, I never really ran. I grew up as a swimmer, and running long distances was never part of my life. But watching my dad face cancer with such strength and determination changed how I see what is possible. It made me believe in myself in a new way, and it made me want to challenge myself for something bigger than me.
Running the New York City Marathon is my way of honoring my family, supporting the research and care that gave my dad more time, and helping other families who are still in the fight. My dad’s story is not over, and I am running for every chapter still being written.
