Matthew Townsend
Hi. Welcome to my fundraising page!
I’m taking on the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon with Fred’s Team, the official running program of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). My goal is to raise as much as I can to support groundbreaking cancer research at MSK, and your donation will give me a boost as I train for my race.
My Journey Back to the NYC Marathon
On Father's Day 2025, I suffered a back injury playing basketball. I started physical therapy and recovered well until a few months later when I did more damage while trying to lift a heavy cooler. I was soon diagnosed with a herniated disc in my lower back that was pinching the sciatic nerve that runs down my left leg. I then endured several weeks of intense pain and could barely walk. I spent more than two months working from home, often laying on the floor with my laptop. It was awful, both physically and mentally. But I slowly recovered with physical therapy and home workouts.
That experience led me to the goal of running the NYC marathon again, after partaking in 2024 in a fundraising spot for a different cancer researcher center.
I'm dedicating this year's run to family members who have passed away after a battle with cancer. The include my paternal grandfather Wiley Malone, aunt Sherri Wolfe, father-in-law Anthony Orel and uncle Wayne Malone.
100% of Your Donation Supports Research
Named in honor of New York City Marathon co-founder and MSK patient Fred Lebow, Fred’s Team brings together passionate runners and supporters to lead the way against cancer. 100% of the funds I raise will go directly into MSK labs, where doctors and scientists have expertise in more than 400 types of cancer and work every day to find new cures.
Donate Today!
When you make a gift to Fred’s Team, you help MSK researchers develop better treatment options for the people who need them most. Together, we can make a big difference.
Additionally, many employers match these kinds of donations, so please seek one if possible.
Thank you for your generosity!
