A Legacy of Friends & Family Rallying Around a Cause
In 2020, I dusted off the old running shoes as a counter-balance to the way many of us made it through the early days of 2021 -- by eating and drinking. In the summer of 2020, I was 4 years cancer-free and the healthiest I had been in a long, long time, until I found another lump while conducting a self-exam. I knew immediately; the cancer was back or a new cancer had started. I held off my first surgery of my second testicular cancer so I could run my first half-marathon in the virtual Baltimore Running Festival. Fast forward a few months, I was receiving inpatient treatment at Sloan after a major abdominal surgery in a visitor-free, Covid-era hospital and I was doing what all 35 year old men would be doing in such a scenario -- watching cheesy movies that made me cry like Brittany Runs a Marathon. After finishing the movie, my required PT included conversations of being a runner and my physical therapist said, "You know Sloan has a team for the NYC Marathon..."
I made it back to my hospital bed, picked up my phone and texted two of my best friends who were serving as my therapists and said, "Sloan has a NYC Marathon team..." Steve and Brian immediately (and maybe a bit skeptically) responded, "if you run a marathon, I'll do it with you." And, Burke's Team was born. Since then, we've grown and the run is less about my cancer-journey (5.5 years cancer-free!) and more about raising awareness, raising money for the hospital to which I owe an endless debt, and creating a running community of friends and family.
I got better, and Burke's Team has thrived.
Donate Today!
The level of care I got at Sloan wasn't just enough to make me better, but at a level that helped my family navigate the process. When you make a gift to Fred’s Team, you help MSK researchers develop better treatment options for the people who need them most. Together, we can make a big difference.
100% of your donations go directly to cancer research, and these are the researchers we want to fund.
Thank you for your generosity!
