Concert for a Cure
‘No one should cry for me when I’m gone. I’ve lived the life of 3 men’ – We heard our dad utter those words on countless occasions, and they are as true now as the day he spoke them. He faced down death so many times in his life that they were on a first name basis, and he stuck around longer than anyone, himself included, would have ever expected. Our father’s life was truly one to be celebrated and not mourned. And in that spirit, our hope is to gather together each year, in song and in revelry, in hopes that if we sing in the right harmony and cheer just loud enough, that he just might hear us.
As we honor a man who did so much for so many, ‘No Ego Just Truth’, we ask that you help us by giving generously in our father’s memory to the team at Memorial Sloan Kettering. After being admitted to our local hospital and subsequently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, we were told, in no uncertain terms, that it was time to get his affairs in order, quickly. Being raised to take bad news as a starting point for further negotiations and being fortunate enough to live in proximity to one of the top cancer centers in the country, we ‘rolled the dice’. And what we received was the greatest gift anyone could ever receive – TIME. Time for more memories, more laughs, more songs. Time with new grandchildren, time for first steps, time for last goodbyes.
The Doctors at MSK determined that our father was an excellent candidate for a course of treatment called immunotherapy, notably, a drug that had recently passed experimental trials and is now being used, in certain cases, as an alternative to chemotherapy to slow, and potentially suppress the growth of tumors. This treatment is what ultimately extended our father’s life by years and more importantly, provided him with a high quality of life, up until the very end. While the medical community continues to make progress in working towards a cure for cancer, it is our hope, that through your generosity, that we can help bolster the experimental research and alternative treatment methods that MSK is able to offer patients, like our father, the gift of time.
