Funding Hope for Cholangiocarcinoma Research

Rich lived with a love that strengthened everyone around him, leaving a legacy of kindness, connection, and generosity. Today, that legacy lives on through the Richard L. Diver Research Endowed Fellowship Fund at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Cholangiocarcinoma, or bile duct cancer, is a rare and aggressive disease with limited treatment options. Cases of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma have been rising worldwide over the past two decades, yet progress has been hindered by a lack of research and funding. Most patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage, and standard treatment with intravenous chemotherapy offers only limited benefit.

Memorial Sloan Kettering is leading a bold effort to change that. Under the leadership of Dr. William Jarnagin, Dr. Andrea Cercek, and their team, researchers have pioneered hepatic artery infusion (HAI) therapy, which delivers chemotherapy directly to liver tumors. Recent clinical trials have demonstrated dramatic improvements in survival, and an international study is now underway that could establish HAI as a new standard of care.

MSK is also advancing precision medicine through genomic testing, immunotherapy, and innovative imaging technologies. These breakthroughs are bringing new hope to patients around the world and have already led to remarkable outcomes for individuals once considered untreatable.
