Please support my run with Fred's Team and help MSK researchers develop better treatment options for the people who need them most.
When I started running at 45, I did not expect that one of the benefits would be to carry me through cancer treatment. I was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer, while I was training to run three marathons spread over a 5-week period as a result of COVID-19 rescheduling.
The doctors advised me to stay active and maintain as much of my usual routine as possible, so I continued training. Running became a crucial part of my recovery, helping me cope with the physical effects of the treatment.
On October 11, 2021, I took a day off from radiation treatment and, with my family cheering me on, I completed the Boston Marathon. Then, two weeks after the treatment concluded, on November 7th, I ran the NYC Marathon many pounds lighter and a few minutes slower, a remarkable experience. Cancer treatment has come a long way. It's incredible to think that just a few years ago, I would have been reliant on an enteral feeding tube due to the nature of my cancer treatment.
I am truly grateful to Dr. Lee, Dr. Hung, their teams, and the exceptional care provided at MSK and NYPC. Their support and expertise allowed me not only to maintain my positive outlook and functionality but also to run two marathons!
After my son Daniel ran NYC Marathon with Fred's Team in 2022, I am happy to join the team to celebrate five years from my treatment at MSK and to support the mission to end cancer for good.
