For years, I’ve experienced the New York City Marathon the way many New Yorkers do — standing on the sidelines with a coffee in hand early in the morning watching the professionals fly by, then later in the day with a bloody mary cheering on the everyday runners pushing themselves through all five boroughs. Every year I’d leave inspired, telling myself, “Maybe next year will be the year I run.”
Unfortunately, this story is also connected to another one that far too many families know personally.
In October 2024, I lost my mother after her battle with pancreatic cancer. Just a few years earlier, my grandmother — her mother — passed away from the same disease. Anyone who has gone through cancer alongside someone they love understands the emotional whiplash that comes with it: hope for a promising treatment or clinical trial followed by disappointing news, good days that briefly feel normal followed by stretches where the person you love becomes almost unrecognizable.
This year, I have the privilege of running the marathon with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to support cancer research and patient care.
I know my story is not unique. Too many people have experienced loss, fear, and helplessness because of cancer. My hope is that this run can play a small part in helping fund the research that leads to better treatments, better outcomes, and ultimately more time with the people we love.
Thank you for supporting me, Fred’s Team, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in the fight against cancer.
