Mary Darcy
Sometimes daughters do things their mothers would rather they didn't. I can't imagine my mother would want her daughter, the kid who skipped gym class, the kid who had her nose in a book while everyone else was on the playground, the kid who nearly knocked herself out with her own knee doing aerobics, to run 26.2 miles across the city of New York. And she certainly wouldn't want me to do it in her name.
Sorry, Ma.
On the last day of summer in her 60th year, Carolyn Ann Alberto Darcy left us. To say it was way too soon would be a gross understatement. 60 birthdays, 60 autumns, the season she loved, 60 Christmases. She is sorely missed every day.
My mother died of kidney cancer. It came out of left field. She was diagnosed in August and gone in September. This year, as I approach a milestone birthday of my own, I am joining Fred's Team, the official running program of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), to run the 2026 New York City Marathon. My goal is to raise as much as I can to support groundbreaking cancer research at MSK, and your donation will give me a boost as I train for my race.
100% of Your Donation Supports Research
Named in honor of New York City Marathon co-founder and MSK patient Fred Lebow, Fred’s Team brings together passionate runners and supporters to lead the way against cancer. 100% of the funds I raise will go directly into MSK labs, where doctors and scientists have expertise in more than 400 types of cancer and work every day to find new cures.
Donate Today!
When you make a gift to Fred’s Team, you help MSK researchers develop better treatment options for the people who need them most. Together, we can make a big difference.
Thank you for your generosity!
