Fundraiser: Barre for MSK Kids
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
A Celebration of Hope
October 18, 2023
Class description: An all levels community barre class focusing on finding your inner strength to become stronger at the barre and more confident in and out of the studio. We will use different techniques to find your most challenging depths.
Come celebrate cures for Childhood Cancer!
Let’s create a world with more reasons to celebrate! Find your strength in the moment, propelling you towards increased endurance and flexibility, improved posture, and longer, leaner, more powerful muscles, all while raising money for Memorial Sloan Cancer Center Pediatric Research a week after the 11th anniversary of my daughter’s diagnosis.
Why am I fundraising for MSKCC Kids?
I am the mother of a pediatric cancer survivor. On October 12, 2012, my beautiful daughter was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She was 2.5 years old. She is 13 now. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is the institution that treated her, and ultimately saved her. I am forever grateful for them.
Why I love Barre?
Developed by injured dancer, Lotte Berk, in the 1950’s, she combined elements of ballet, yoga, and physiotherapy to rehabilitate and strengthen her dancer’s physique. It’s challenging yet low impact, and the best way I know how to get deep into your muscles in minimal time. Barre creates a stronger mind body connection. You learn proper form, which can be applied to daily life or other exercise formats to keep your body healthy.
Why P57?
Unlike other barré offerings, P57 includes both small and large ranges of motion, making your workout functional. We incorporate cardio boosts throughout, so you leave getting a truly complete workout. We warm up with heavier weights, making the most of your time, while building bone density. And, last but not least, our cooldown will stretch your body and calm your mind.
Why MSK Kids?
This year, approximately 16,000 children, adolescents, and young adults (AYA) in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer. More of these patients will be treated at MSK Kids, the pediatric program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), than any other hospital in the country.
During the past 30 years, ground-breaking advances in technology and treatment—many of which were pioneered at MSK Kids—have led to cures for at least 80 percent of all pediatric cancer patients. MSK is committed to continue raising that number through our patient- and family-centered care and scientific expertise, as well as by reducing the long-term effects of cancer therapies. Unfortunately, pediatric cancers are too often understudied, creating gaps in our understanding of their causes and potential cures. With expertise in over 400 cancer types and nearly 2,000 clinical trials underway at a given time, MSK is making a massive difference in the lives of people everywhere with cancer. MSK physician-scientists are committed to discovering new ways to prevent, detect, treat, and cure all forms of the disease.
