Samuel Funt
I am a medical oncologist specializing in the care of people with bladder cancer (urothelial carcinoma) and testicular cancer (germ cell tumors). I work with skilled surgeons, radiation oncologists, pathologists, nurses, and support staff to provide the best possible care in a compassionate and professional environment. My goal is to help patients feel confident that my team and I will fight for them and always have their best interests at heart. I also strive for a personalized approach focused on the tumor’s genetic profile as well as each’s patient’s unique personal beliefs and background.
Immunotherapy has revolutionized how we treat people with bladder cancer. Most people don’t respond to immunotherapy, however, and we can’t tell ahead of time who will. My research focuses on improving outcomes for people with bladder cancer by leading clinical trials testing immunotherapies. I am also working to develop immune-related biomarkers that can predict who will benefit.
Unfortunately, some men with advanced testicular cancer do not respond to chemotherapy and their disease progresses. These are often young adults in the prime of their lives. To help this group, I am investigating ways to help predict resistance or sensitivity to chemotherapy before treatment begins. I am also investigating immunotherapy in people with relapsed and refractory testicular cancer and the role of a novel biomarker called miRNA in the detection and monitoring of testicular cancers.
My research has been recognized by the Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Cancer Society.
