MSK Kids, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s pediatric program, is home to the largest oncology program for children and young adults in the country.
Researchers work together to lead breakthroughs that improve the standard of care for challenging childhood cancers, including Wilms’ tumors and other kidney tumors in children. MSK Kids also provides support and services to families facing financial challenges when a child receives a cancer diagnosis.
Philanthropic partnership with MSK is crucial to continued progress in pediatric cancer research and care, and each contribution brings them closer to improving the lives of all children with cancer.
MSK pediatric oncologist Michael Ortiz, MD, led a group that discovered that Wilms’ tumors are exquisitely dependent upon XPO1 — more so than any other tumor type studied.
Using a large panel of laboratory models, including patient-derived tumors known as xenografts, the researchers then demonstrated that Wilms’ tumors are broadly sensitive to XPO1 inhibitors, including selinexor (Xpovio®) and eltanexor.
MSK Kids is actively leveraging this preclinical data to develop an early-phase clinical trial with a particular emphasis on children with relapsed Wilms’ tumors.
Philanthropic funding will accelerate their ability to provide lifesaving care .
