In Memory of Carlos Cuartas
Carlos Cuartas was widely and well-loved by so many throughout the course of his (too short) life. From his boyhood in Colombia, to his teenage and college years in New Jersey and his varied professional, social, familial, and religious lives in New York City, a wide spectrum of people gravitated to Carlos and his kindness, compassion and fun-loving manner. Professionally, Carlos found his rightful home as a hospital chaplain. serving both Lenox Hill and Memorial Sloan Kettering hospitals, the latter caring for him as he fought bravely the cancer that eventually took Carlos from us way too soon.
Several of Carlos' many friends have established this Memorial to their dear friend. We aim to raise funds for the MSK Chaplaincy program, to advance their much-appreciated work providing spiritual care and guidance to believers and non-believers alike, as well as just "being there" in crucial times as patients and families migrate their varied paths that their cancers take them.
Carlos cherished his time as a hospital chaplain and many, many have benefited from his care and guidance. Perhaps some of those whom Carlos touched say it best:
"Carlos offered the same love, kindness and compassion to everyone he met" MSK patient
"Carlos provided a calming presence that really helped our family deal with our father's final chapter" Son of patient
"When Carlos was with us, he was always present--he had nowhere else to be, no emails to check or phone calls to make" Patient caregiver
"What I remember most was his genuine care and concern, not just for me but for my wife...my primary caregiver" MSK patient
"His indomitable faith and love of God shone light into the lives of everyone he touched" MSK patient
"Oh, our dear Carlos" MSK co-worker
"May God bless Carlos as he has all the fortunate he came to know, serve and love" Patient family member
For those of you who loved Carlos as much as we did, please consider joining us in our small way to support those who continue the good work he so loved. As Carlos would say Bless You...oh and let's share a beer sometime :)
