Cindy Furey
Welcome to my fundraising page! I’m taking on the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon with Fred’s Team, the official running program of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). My goal is to raise as much as I can to support groundbreaking cancer research at MSK, and your donation will give me a boost as I train for my race.
Running the New York City Marathon on behalf of the Fred’s Team will be more than a race for me—it will be a powerful, full-circle moment shaped by survival, service, and hope for the next generation.
I was born in Brooklyn, and the idea of running the streets of New York as part of this iconic race feels deeply personal—like coming home with a renewed sense of purpose. To return to the city where my life began, now as a survivor, a healthcare provider, and an advocate, would make this experience even more meaningful.
Six years ago, I was diagnosed with multifocal ER/PR+ breast cancer. I underwent a bilateral mastectomy to treat seven tumors, stepping into a reality that, until then, had been part of my family history but not yet my own. My mother faced breast cancer at just 40 years old, enduring a radical mastectomy and radiation at a time when treatment options and support systems were far more limited. Her experience shaped my understanding of strength, but living through my own diagnosis deepened it in ways I could never have anticipated.
Although my genetic testing was negative, the shadow of this disease still lingers—especially as I think about my daughter. Like so many mothers, I want a different future for her. I want a world where breast cancer is no longer something she has to fear, navigate, or endure. Running for Fred’s Team is my way of actively contributing to that vision—supporting research, education, and access to care so that fewer women face this diagnosis, and those who do have better outcomes and less devastating treatment consequences.
As a pelvic physical therapist, I work closely with women who are currently battling breast, gynecological, urological and other cancers or living with its lasting effects. Every day, I see the toll this disease takes beyond the diagnosis itself—pelvic pain, musculoskeletal dysfunction, lymphedema, and the many physical and emotional challenges that follow treatment. It is deeply meaningful work to help these women and men regain strength, function, and quality of life. But I often feel the pull to do more—to not only help women recover, but to help change the trajectory of the disease altogether. Raising funds for research and prevention through the Fred’s Team allows me to extend my impact beyond the clinic and into the future of cancer care.
Running has always been my anchor—my way of finding clarity, strength, and resilience. I have completed four marathons in the past, but none since my diagnosis in 2019. Returning to the marathon distance now carries a different meaning. It represents not just endurance, but gratitude—for my health, for the care I received, and for the ability to move forward with purpose.
The 2026 New York City Marathon would be my final marathon as I approach 60. I know my running miles are finite, which makes this opportunity all the more meaningful. To run through the streets of New York—my birthplace—surrounded by a community that embodies perseverance and spirit, while representing Fred’s Team and MSK and the millions affected by cancer, would be an honor beyond words.
This race would not just be about crossing a finish line—it would be about honoring my mother’s journey, celebrating my own survivorship, supporting the patients I care for, and advocating for a future where my daughter and others may never have to face this disease.
